I don’t know about you but it was always a mystery to me how many actual square feet I had in my front and back yards. I found a ‘trick’ on how to calculate and measure your lawn’s square footage online by simply using Google Maps. Thankfully the smart kids in Silicone Valley built a square footage calculator into their maps tool and we can exploit this ‘hack’ to figure out the square footage of any yard in the world.
How To Calculate (Measure) Your Lawn Square Footage Using Google Maps
Total Time: 2 minutes
Go to Google Maps
Go to https://maps.google.com
Enter your address and zoom in.
Enter an address and zoom down as close as you can.
Switch to satellite view.
Change to Satellite view to get your yard in the picture.
Right click a corner of the lot and select measure distance.
Right-click one of the corners of your lawn.
Left-click the entire area until the dots join
Left-click all the corners of the area you want to measure.
At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see the total lawn square footage
Like a wizard, your total area and the total distance are calculated automagically for you at the bottom of the screen.
